Malocclusion Teeth: Causes, Symptoms and Cure

Very few people are born with perfect teeth. For most, the variations are minor. But for some, alignment of the teeth is so far off that it is not only noticeable, but can also be taxing on their health. This misalignment is referred to as Malocclusion.

Types of Malocclusion

The misalignment of teeth comes in three main categories:

  1. In Class 1, the bite is normal, but the top teeth slightly overlap the bottom ones. This is the most common type.

  2. Class 2 is referred to as retrognathism. This is an overbite and occurs when the upper jaw and teeth are in a position to overlap the bottom teeth and jaw.

  3. Class 3 is called prognathism. This is an under bite and is the reverse of the class 2 category.

Causes of Malocclusions

The misalignment of teeth can be caused by a variety of reasons including, but not limited to:

  • Hereditary

  • Thumb-sucking after the age of three

  • Birth defects such as cleft palate

  • Too many or too few teeth

Symptoms of Malocclusion

A dentist can readily tell if you have a misalignment, but there are symptoms you can look for to help determine if there is a problem.

  • Teeth don’t line up

  • Difficulty chewing food properly

  • Speech problems

  • Mouth breathing

Fixing the problem

There are a few different things a dentist can do to correct a malocclusion. Which method used will be determined by what is causing the misalignment.

  1. Braces

  2. Removal of extra teeth

  3. Repairing mis-shapen or overly large teeth

  4. Surgery to correct jaw or mouth abnormalities

Treatment is necessary in order to allow for proper dental hygiene. Beyond that, being able to completely and comfortably chew food will prevent damage to the digestive system.
